Abstract:
On the example of the Central Federal District of Russia there was studied the relationship between hair elemental profile of residents (children 3...15 years old and adults 25...50 years old) and dominant type of soil in the areas: podzol or chernozem. In hair of residents 25 chemical elements were determined by the methods ICP...AES and ICP...MS: Al, As, B, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, I, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Se, Si, Sn, V, Zn. For all groups there were calculated median values and interquartile ranges, as well as frequencies of deviation from conventional biologically acceptable levels. The conducted study has revealed significant differences in hair elemental composition between residents of areas with different dominant soil type. Comparison of medians and interquartile ranges showed that content of most essential chemical elements in hair of inhabitants was significantly higher in chernozem regions, except for Mg (among adults) and Zn (among all the surveyed population). At the same time, the content of toxic and conditionally essential chemical elements in them may be either lower (Hg, Li, V, Sn, As, Al) or higher (Cd, Ni, Pb) than in residents of nonchernozem areas. The established differences are more pronounced in the female population. In addition to analyzing the absolute contents of chemical elements in the hair there was examined a comparison of individual elemental profiles with conventional biologically acceptable levels proposed by A.V.Skalny (2002). This method allowed us to estimate the prevalence of imbalance of chemical elements in hair among the observed population. In general, population of areas with a predominance of chernozem was better provided with essential chemical elements (P, Se, Ca, Mg, K, Na, I) and to a lesser extent was inclined to accumulation of toxic elements (Hg). An exception was Zn, whose hair content was generally higher in the areas with podzolic soils. As a whole, the results correspond to the available data on the content of mobile forms of chemical elements in soils of the regions, which suggests their influence on the elemental composition of hair of the population.
