Isolation, Characterization and Biological Activity of Polysaccharides from Stellaria Media L

Abstract:
The purpose of the present work is isolation of polysaccharide fractions from the aerial parts of Stellaria media L., establishment their basic composition and study of hepatoprotective activity.
Three fractions of polysaccharides (SM 1, SM 2, SM 3) are isolated as a result, sequential extraction with water, acidified water (pH 4.0) and 0.7 % solution of ammonium oxalate from the aerial parts of Stellaria media L. It is established that the composition of carbohydrate chains of water-soluble polysaccharides fractions of SM 1 and SM 2 includes residues methoxylated galacturonic acid, glucose, galactose, arabinose, rhamnose, xylose and mannose. The polysaccharide component fraction SM 3 is presented by pectin polysaccharide with the primary content galacturonan.
Fraction SM 1 containing water-soluble polysaccharides activates the regenerative-reparative processes at rats with experimental toxic hepatitis, with a daily for 6 days oral introduction at a dose (100 mg/kg) once a day. This indicates the presence of hepatoprotective activity similar to medicine «Carsil».
