An analysis of the stages and technologies of development of information processing and management systems in the context of the history of the formation of the department is necessary for a deep understanding of the development trends of modern scientific and educational areas of training specialists in information technology. Historical information is often fragmented and unevenly distributed along the time axis. Its content bears the imprint of the era in the style of text descriptions and often has a personal character. It is necessary to re-evaluate the available historical information in order to increase its completeness, objectivity and structure. The object of the study is the history of the department “Information Processing and Management Systems” of the Bauman Moscow State Technical University.

To identify the main stages in the development of the department “Information Processing and Management Systems”, to summarize the achieved scientific and educational results and to determine the main scientific directions for the development of the department. The history of the creation, formation and development of the department “Information Processing and Management Systems” of the Bauman Moscow State Technical University. The scientific directions of the department are presented, associated with the founders of scientific schools in the following areas: computing technology (later – automated control systems), image processing, machine vision, automatic natural language processing, decision support, expert and predictive systems, as well as methods for modeling computational systems. As an example, an automated university management system developed by the staff of the department is described.

The contribution made to the development of the department by its leaders and employees in certain historical periods is analyzed and summarized. A list of major scientific, educational and methodological works of the department “Information Processing and Management Systems” has been formed. The generalized structure of the automated control system of the university is described.
