The prehistory of radio physical investigations in the Kharkov University and Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology is shown. The pioneering experiments on electromagnetism and radio engineering of N. Pilchikov and A. Gruzintsev, as well as the foundation and the leadership of the first systematic investigations by D. Rozhansky and A. Slutskin and the developing of the high-power L-band magnetrons and first three-coordinate radar in the 1930–40s are traced against the historical background. Contribution the of scientists (А. Usikov, S. Braude et. al.), who played an important part in the development of the Kharkov radio physical community after World War II and in the establishment of the А.Usikov Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1955 is emphasized. The steps in the development of the major scientific research areas (radio physics and electronics, radio physical research of the solid-state structures and biological objects, radio wave propagation, radar and remote sensing of the Earth with space-born instruments) are described. The basic scientific results of the fundamental investigations and development of the unique devises and systems which were carried out by different research teams of the institute in the 1955–2010 are presented.
