In the review the engineering design technique of phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer (FS) with passive and active loop filters (LF) is short analyzed. Recommendations for PLL pass-band choice are given and LF elements calculation relationships are presented. LF resistive elements noise figure calculation and characteristics of FS with active LF are separately considered.
The MathCad computer program for power spectral density and phase noise calculation is developed. Two numerical examples of FS elements synthesis with passive and active LF as well as analysis results of their characteristics are presented. The element parameters of the leading domestic and foreign manufacturers as initial data for calculations are used. Comparison of the results with data obtained by Analog Devices software product ADIsimPLL 3.1 is given. Good, practically exact, agreement between them is observed.
