The waveform of ultra-wideband (UWB) pulses with a large fractional bandwidth (f/f0) may be changed significantly in the process of reflection from different “flare spots” of a target as well as in the process of transmission, propagation, and reception. As a result, the form of pulses received from each flare spot become unknown. UWB signal received from a complex target with the radial dimension much greater than the range resolution cell turns out to be a sequence of pulses with unknown form, amplitudes, and delays. This circumstance does not allow using for the UWB signals the classical definition of a radar cross section (RCS) of the target with the help of the peak values of electromagnetic fields. The energy approach to definition the RCS in this case is offered. As a signal in a point of reception an output signal of the processing system is offered to use.
