Size effect on the mechanical properties of the polymer coatings deposited from the active gas phase

The extreme pattern of the thickness influence of PTFE coatings deposited from the active gas phase on their visco-elastic properties and wear-resistance is established. It is shown that the boundary layers of a polymer with a thickness up to 20 nm are characterized by the highest mechanical properties, and at a distance from the surface of 50..100 nm a region with a low abrasion resistance and low viscosity is formed. When the coatings are deposited on a surface treated with nitrogen ions, the viscosity of the coating increases. The results obtained are interpreted using the orientational effects manifested in such coatings.
