Assessment of influence of a ground reflector on the external characteristics of the transmitting and receiving anten-nas for over-the-horizon surface wave radar

The influence of the ground metallized reflector on the transmitting and receiving surface (terrestrial) wave antennas has been inves-tigated. To evaluate the effect of a ground reflector we have used the rigorous (numerical) solution of the boundary problem for the antenna system comprising an antenna and a ground reflector, which are situated in the free space. The restrictions on the use of the interference method when calculating the external characteristics of the surface wave antennas have been discussed. The experimental results for the resonant antenna and non-resonant one have been given. On the basis of analysis of influence of a ground reflector on the external characteristics of antennas we have drawn a conclusion about appropriateness of using of the reflector to reduce the surface wave losses at the area between the antenna and the sea. It was assumed that the area, providing a significant impact on the external characteristics of the antenna can reach high values. So, if the distance to the sea is 75 meters and the field of view is 120 degrees, the area is 56,000 square meters (the width of the area along the coastline is approximately 1 km and the width along the line passing through the antenna phase centre is 500 meters). The impact of the reflector is shown in elevation distortion of the radiation pattern: radiation increase at the upper elevation angles and radiation reducing along the surface.
