High-accuracy positioning of ground radio frequency sources from a single air vehicle by means of phase difference measurements of signals received by spaced antennas

High accuracy of measurement (evaluation) of radio-frequency source (RFS) position data in airborne radio monitoring equipment can be achieved by maximum-likelihood processing of in-flight obtained measurements of full phase differences of a signal received by spaced antennas. The objective is to choose RFS positioning algorithms that are optimal by accuracy and hardware and computing resources, and to acquire speculative and experimental estimates of achievable accuracy values. The paper dwells on placement of wide-beam reception antennas of a phase direction finder that enables unambiguous measurement of a full phase difference of a signal received by its two antennas maximally spaced in flight course direction on the side surface of air vehicle (AV) fuselage. To obtain RFS position data estimates it is suggested to apply calculation algorithm based on least squares of adjustments of full phase differences of received signals. Theoretical evaluations are given for root-mean-square errors in efficient positioning of RFS (without consideration of AV navigation errors) by the suggested algorithm, as well as flight test results.
