Excitation of electromagnetic surface waves (ESW) by an elementary electric dipole in the metamaterial grounded slab with negative permittivity and negative permeability has been considered. The dispersion equation has been obtained and the dispersion characteristics of surface TM-waves have been studied. The dependences of ESW propagation constants on the metamaterial electromagnetic properties and plate thickness have been analyzed. Main attention has been paid to the energy characteristics of the waves. The av-erage values of the radial component of ESW Poynting vector have been calculated. It has been shown that ESW energy flows outside and inside the plate have opposite directions. The directions of an energy flow and a phase velocity are opposite inside the plate. The distribution of the energy flow density in the structure cross section has been calculated. The dependence of power carried by these waves along the plate on the structure parameters has been researched.
