High accuracy measurement technique for far field antenna characteristics

The antenna measurement methods improvement has an enormous value in the process of antennas development. The antenna pa-rameters measurement requires adequate metrological maintenance to improve the accuracy (reliability) of experimental results. In this paper, the methodology of experimental studies of the antenna characteristics in the far field has been described, the analytical and metrological proof of the lowering of the measurement inaccuracy and the results of computer simulation and some experimental works have been presented. The technique is based on the use of standardized equipment of measurement system, with minor additions in its functional and structural schemes. The method of high accuracy measuring of the antenna characteristics is based on the method of comparison with the reference attenuation. The standard high-precision calibrated smooth attenuator indication is used as the reference attenuation. The authors have proposed a unique measurement scheme: a smooth coaxial attenuator is included in the receiving channel of the spectrum analyzer of the receiving subsystem that allows using only one attenuator with the frequency range from 20 MHz to 2 GHz, which covers the entire range of measurement system (from 100 MHz to 178 GHz). This method is applicable for high-precision measurements of the antenna characteristics, for which due to the importance of knowing their exact values measurement time can be forgone, especially for certification of probe antenna options.
