Along with laser interferometry microwave interferometry is widely used for diagnostics of fast gas-dynamic processes. To the present time in Yu.Ye. Sedakov Research Institute of Measuring Systems the single-channel radio interferometer (RI) and multi-channel RI operating in the millimeter wave range have been developed and metrologically certified. The single-channel RI provides measuring of displacement of fronts of shock and detonation waves with a relative error of about 0,1%. The multi-channel RI allows to restore the shape of the diagnosed object or process and to investigate the dynamics of its change. The technical solutions the use of which ensures the achievement of the specified measurement accuracy of the diagnosed objects displacement have been described in the work. The directions of further development of microwave interferometry such as increasing the spatial resolution of measurements, the transition to the submillimeter wavelength range, enhanced functionality of the device through a combination of measurements of motion parameters and temperature of the studied object or process have been defined. The possible ways of solving the above mentioned tasks have been considered.
