Compact mode transformer on double-ridged waveguide

Multimode waveguides are widely used in modern high-power applications transferring hundreds of megawatts and also in waveguide measurements and antenna equipment for creation of multimode antennas with complex directivity pattern. Waveguide mode transfor-mers are the devices providing transformation of one propagating mode of the waveguide to others. For today one of the mode transformer types which found realization on the basis of circular and rectangular waveguides is a transfor-mer on abrupt changes of cross-section. Such transformers contain series of transverse junctions of waveguides. The transformers con-structed on this principle possess the small longitudinal dimensions and are rather simple in production, and their working frequency range is 1−2%. The realization of mode transformers on waveguides with complex cross-section in particular on double-ridged waveguides allows reduc-ing mass-dimensional characteristics of the device and also providing a regular outside profile, thanks to abrupt changes only of height of the ridges on transformer length. In the paper the problem of synthesis of the waveguide mode transformer on the double-ridged waveguide is considered. The calculation of TE- and TM-modes of symmetrical and asymmetrical double-ridged waveguide is carried out by the method of partial regions includ-ing electromagnetic field singularity at the metal edge, the multimode calculation of characteristics of a single transverse junction of two double-ridged waveguide is carried out by a variation method, and calculation of characteristics of a complete device – by the rules of cascade connection of multiports taking into account both propagating, and not propagating TE- and TM-waves. It is shown that the offered configuration of the transformer allows receiving compact waveguide devices with efficiency of mode trans-formation more than 12 dB.
