Selected aspects of ultrawideband signals and their realization in receive path of sonar apparatus

The process of active involvement of water areas on the Earth to human economic activity accompanied with increasing complexity and scale of solving tasks. This in turn requires the improvement of some technical characteristics, used for different types of sonars, including side scan sonar (SSS). In this regard, an alternative solution of improving technical characteristics of SSS is the use of ultra-wideband probing signals (UWBS), but there are many problems associated with the use of UWBS in sonars, such as the forming, transmitting, receiving and processing of UWB signals. From the beginning of 2010 JSC «NIIP» with the participation of collaborators of State Company «IRE by V.A. Kotelnikov RAS» engaged in wideband sonar, trying to find ways of solving the aforementioned problems in this area. There are two variants for processing UWBS: one way is handling UWBS, which is held in digital form; and the second way is the processing of the signal by using the Hilbert transform. It was proposed to realize the Hilbert transform in analog form with using of passive broadband phase shifter. Based on the simulation results, we can conclude that for implementation of broadband passive phase shifter all its elements must be precise and have a high thermal and long-term stability. During laboratory tests, it was found that the phase shifter provides a phase difference between the output signals of 90 degrees in the frequency band from 60 to 180 kHz with accuracy within 5−6%. However, by using this method of processing discrepancy of the amplitudes of the real and imaginary signal components in the channels and the different zero offset in the ADC cause errors. Therefore these effects have to be taken into consideration during the processing of the UWB signal. In the conclusion, it should be noted that the use of the phase shifter will greatly simplify the processing of UWB signals and improve the quality of the sonar image.
