Comparison of Fresnel-field to far-field and near-field to far-field transformations

Radiation pattern reconstruction methods based on the use of cylindrical and spherical functions are used in practice for near-field antenna measurements. A similar technique is Fresnel-field measurements methods, which have their own advantages. One of such methods is Fresnel-field measurements method using sparse field samples, which requires a smaller amount of measurements than other methods. However, far-field can also be reconstructed from Fresnel-field samples using near-field to far-field transformations used in near-field antenna measurements. It is naturally to assume that these field transformations produce similar results, but in known publications the problem of equivalence of these methods was not addressed. In this paper, comparison of Fresnel-field measurement technique using sparse field samples and near-field measurement techniques on a cylinder and on a sphere based on the use of cylindrical and spherical waves is given. Radiation pattern is represented as a linear combination of near-field samples. It is shown that if measurements take place on a cylinder in Fresnel region, the asymptotics of such representation coincides with Fresnel-field to far-field transformation using sparse field samples. It is also shown that if measurements take place on a sphere, then the asymptotics of near-field technique does not coincide with Fresnel-field to far-field transformation.
