L-band airborne AESA design features and it’s measurement methodology

Problems of linear L-band AESA design, which operates in different modes, are considered. There are 3 main problems in airborne linear AESA design: radiators deployment in small volume compartment, impossibility to design AESA with use of monolith transmit/receive modules and the requirements to measure radiation patterns of such AESA with given influence of AESA carrier. Special attention is given to measurement methods of linear L-band AESA radiation patterns. Numerical electrodynamics methods to accommodate AESA carrier influence are proposed. Model consisting of two parts describing geometry of radiators and surrounding elements of carrier, electric properties of materials and input complex excitation coefficients (CEC) are used. Measurements of transmission coefficients of AESA channels are carried out to determine CEC. Known measurements uncertainties of test equipment are used to increase tolerance of measurements. These measurements uncertainties are used to define complex error vectors. There are K (K≥10) amplitude and phase distributions in a result which are used to restore K AESA radiation patterns. After statistical processing one can determine AESA radiation characteristics. Restored patterns are compared with experimental patterns measured by means of the collimator method. The following own-made devices are also described – multifunctional amplifying device and automated supply switch. These devices considerably decrease number of connections of workplace and ease tuning and control of AESA, and increase shielding of workplace which is important when measuring AESA characteristics in transmit mode. Coaxial-to-stripline distribution system is proposed to measure AESA total radiating signal during the climate tests.
