This paper presents illustrated review of the on-board satellite communication systems and satellite television systems. Basic requirement for antenna arrays in communication systems is the high gain value in operating bandwidth. Gain value of the array antenna is defined by the equivalent aperture with beam deviated to the direction of satellite. As well, antennas used in modern on-board satellite communication systems should have low profile, providing an ability of mounting on the fuselage for any type of carrier, e.g. an aircraft. There is a trend in satellite communication antenna systems to be build as active electrically steerable array (AESA). The advantages are the simplification of the distribution system and raised power budget. This paper presents the directivity characteristics and design options of on-board satellite communication AESAs. The elements of the antenna array should have elliptic or switchable polarization, because the mutual orientation of aircraft and satellite may change during operation. A review of AESA-capable radiators is given. Several designs of wideband radiators with circular and linear polarizations are discussed.
